IHC Closing

We opened an integrative primary care clinic in October 2012 as a pilot test to study integrative medicine in primary care and to examine the cost implications for patients and employers who use an integrative center. We have had many wonderful successes including always having greater demand than the clinic could accommodate. More than 1800 patients joined the clinic and more than 700 patients enrolled in our outcomes study. We know from the preliminary study results that integrative care had a significant impact on the lives of the people who came to the integrative center. The practitioners had very high ratings, and satisfaction scores for a primary care operation were extremely high. Additionally, patients self-reported significant positive changes in multiple areas ranging from decreased stress to improved sleep and reduced time lost from work.

By state law the University of Arizona cannot directly operate a clinic; rather, we must work with an operating partner. After the University changed it's affiliation to a different health care partner, District Medical Group informed us that they were going to focus on other opportunities. DMG generously continued to operate the clinic for more than a year while we searched for another partner. But there came a time we could not continue to operate with an uncertain future, and we decided to close the University of Arizona Integrative Health Center in Phoenix on July 29.

We are proud that our pilot test was successful and that we showed it is possible to create a viable model for integrative primary care. We will continue to support and consult with organizations, heath care networks, physicians, and other practitioners or operating partners who wish to create an integrative practice.

We want to thank the practitioners and staff that made the Integrative Health Center so successful and had such an impact on so many lives. We especially thank our Fellowship graduates, Heidi Rula, medical director, and Cheri Dersam, Sandra Murray, Emily Zaragoza and Kathy Engles for their dedication to their patients and the integrative clinic. They have much reason to be proud of what they accomplished!

Best wishes,

Dr. Victoria Maizes and Dr. Andrew Weil
